The early-1990s UK meeting point between ambient's suspended atmosphere and Jamaican dub's bass, echo, and mixing-desk space. The Orb brought it into the album charts while Beyond Records' Ambient Dub compilations gave the hybrid a name and a scene (DJ Mag, Beyond Records, Higher Intelligence Agency).
The sound
Ambient pads, environmental samples, and slow harmonic movement anchored by dub sub-bass, offbeat echoes, spring-reverb haze, and rhythms that drift rather than push toward a club drop.
Listen for: Follow the bass first. It moves with reggae weight, but the drums and samples dissolve into long delays until the track feels less like a groove in a room and more like a whole environment.
Things to know
Beyond Records released Ambient Dub Volume One: The Big Chill in 1992. Its track list included Higher Intelligence Agency's Ketamine Entity, and the series helped turn ambient dub from a description into a recognizable UK scene.
The Orb's U.F.Orb reached number one on the UK albums chart in July 1992, carrying a record full of ambient space, dub bass, and long-form sampling into the mainstream.
Towers of Dub makes the hybrid easy to hear: a heavy reggae-informed bassline carries a fifteen-minute collage of harmonica, found speech, animal sounds, and echoes that seem to recede forever.

- Reggae, Dub & Soundsystem: Ambient dub takes Jamaican dub's central production idea, that the mixing desk, delay, and reverb can become instruments, and moves it into the UK chill-out room. The sub-bass and echo remain recognizably dub even when the rhythm thins out into ambient space.
- Dub Techno: Both styles use sub-bass, delay, reverb, and long stretches of microscopic change. Ambient dub leans toward the chill-out room and sample collage; dub techno keeps a firmer four-on-the-floor pulse. At their deepest and slowest, the border nearly disappears.
